Lower Ammonoosuc Falls

Lower Ammon.png

Carroll, NH

The falls are low-angle cascades that fiercely skip down a series of ledges beside a one-sided rugged granite wall. If you would like to swim, you'll probably want to stay far away from the falls and the currents directly below them. If water conditions are perfect (which is rare), there is a rough but runnable natural waterslide here, as well as a small cave where you can get behind a portion of the falls. No matter what the water levels are, you are likely to enjoy this place: it is one of the premier swimming holes in New Hampshire.

When the currents are too strong for a swim at nearby Upper Ammonoosuc Falls, many of the area visitors will head to this easily-accessible popular swimming hole and fishing site. The pool below the falls is large enough so that swimming here is generally much safer than at the upper falls. This site also does not share anywhere near the list of drowning victims that the upper falls have claimed.

Directions

From the junction of US-302 and US-3 in the section of Carroll known as Twin Mountain, take US-302 east for 3.6 miles and take a left onto Old Cherry Mountain Rd. Almost immediately after turning onto Old Cherry Mountain Rd, take a left onto Lower Falls Rd. Drive 0.2 mile on Lower Falls Rd and park at the end of the road on the right. Old Cherry Mountain Rd is 1.4 miles east of the well-marked Zealand Recreation Area.

To get to Twin Mountain, take I-93 north from Lincoln to US-3 north, or take US-302 west from Conway.

*Another favorite of mine.  Photo doesn't really do it justice.  Very easy walk to falls.
